It has been quite some time since I found this Swedish whisky in my glass, a distillery that in the hands of Angela D’Orazio has distinguishing itself for its desire for experimentation and attention to territory.
Bottled at the end of 2022, it takes its name from the type of casks used for final ageing: in fact, these are classic ex-bourbon first-fill casks to which heads made from Swedish wood have been applied (I remember similar experiments also done by Compass Box).
Limited edition of 3166 fullcask strength bottles from a 2012 distillate with re-raking in Ambassadör casks in 2020.
Tasting notes
On the nose, yellow fruit (ripe apple, peach, banana, pineapple), custard, marzipan and lime intertwine with vegetal and spicy notes of tobacco leaves, aniseed, cinnamon and a hint of ginger. A fresh profile of a certain elegance, to which the addition of a few drops of water brings out honey and toffee, making it more enveloping.
In the mouth it brings forward ginger, black pepper and aniseed in a decisive way, with the body pushed towards citric (grapefruit, lime) and unripe fruit notes (green apple, pear) and the herbaceous part that stands out in the tea and tobacco leaves. The softer components are put in the background, becoming evident along the length with honey, dehydrated coconut and almonds.
The finish is quite long and spicy, dominated by citrus, pears and vegetal notes.
The mix of different woods has left a clear imprint on the distillate, which is more elegant and refined, albeit with some excess on the palate. An interesting dram, reminiscent of certain young speysiders but with an extra edge.
