Given the high esteem in which WhiskyFacile’s Aldunie is held, let’s break the delay and taste another 25 year old: an OB this time, from one of the most underrated distilleries on the entire Scottish scene, Glengoyne. A quarter of a century spent entirely in ex-sherry casks for a whisky offered at 48%ABV and widely available, albeit at a considerable price.
Tasting Notes
The colour is very similar to that of chestnut honey.
The bouquet opens with an inescapable hint of polished light wood, immediately flanked by a caramel note, which over time becomes a kind of base for the aromatic construction that follows: bricks of dried figs, dried apricot, chestnut honey and caramelised nuts. A hint of nutmeg and a hint of milk chocolate complete an overall picture of austere, barely restrained sweetness.
On the palate, certain markers return crystal clear: caramel, dried apricot, polished light wood and chestnut honey. The whipped cream is paired with an orange in a triple version: orange peel, orange juice and orange cream, always yellow, of course. A light dusting of pepper concludes a palate whose main feature is a commendable softness.
The finish is quite long, with notes of caramel, milk chocolate and yellow orange juice.
This is a high-profile drink, mischievous and a little compassionate, like a great star who is so sure of his charm that he does not need to flaunt it. To be honest, we can’t find a single fault with it, even when we think about it over and over again, so how is it that we expected more?
