Increasingly, it’s the narrative and evocations that can be linked to a bottling that are at the centre of marketing campaigns in the whisky world. After all, distillate is an experiential drink, creating a setting in which the enthusiast can relate almost becomes a natural choice.
With this Destination, the Swedish distillery invites aficionados on a journey to visit their Whisky Village and all the areas where they age their casks, divided between different areas of Sweden and around Paris, on a barge moored along the Seine.
The casks that make up the mix are 33% matured in port, 33% American new oak, 25% ex-bourbon and 9% matured in oloroso sherry, with the distillery suggesting that the whisky should be allowed to breathe for a long time in the glass before drinking it.
And who am I to argue with them?
Tasting notes
On the nose, the acidulous part is dominant, evoking red fruit jam (currants, raspberries) with a strong mineral, almost metallic vein running through the aromas. However, it is fruit that marks the path, with red apple, citrus fruits (blood orange, pink grapefruit) and black grapes, with a subtext of nuts (peanuts, almonds), baked apple, malt, gingerbread and a hint of nutmeg. Time allows the notes to harmonise, making the experience more compact and richer.
In the mouth, it has a nice sweetness, still on the fruity side, imbued with a lively charge of ginger, black pepper and nutmeg. Again red fruits (with the addition of strawberry) and apple lead the evocations, with citrus zest and mellow (fruit tart) and vinous components. Slight roasted background note, which emerges especially on the length, together with malt and freshly cut wood.
Medium finish with light spiciness on fruit, malt, wood and pastry.
A fresh and light (in a good way) dram, with enough body to leave you satisfied and a consistent and pleasant aromatic palette. There is personality in this dram, although it perhaps fails to stand out as it should, choosing to fly low, almost afraid to dare.
