This is the latest bottling I am reviewing for Brave New Spirits’ Voodoo series, a range of special single malt and single grain whiskies produced in small batches.
These whiskies are carefully selected from the finest casks, often from exotic and distant locations.
The very distinctive label is, in my opinion, one of the most beautiful.
The bottling I tasted was ‘The Rusty Cauldron’, a single malt distilled on Islay at the Caol Ila distillery, aged for 11 years in second-fill Ex sherry casks and Chateau Lafite barriques, bottled at an alcohol content of 54%ABV.
1251 bottles were produced and it won gold in the 2023 World Whiskies Awards.

Tasting notes

Colour: honey.
On the nose the typical peat of Caol Ila makes itself felt with a slight hint of seaweed, then hints of pastry like cocoa cream which then gives way to fruit like kiwi, cherry and pineapple.
Very fruity on the palate, it releases hints of pear, peach, pineapple and also cherry, mango and melon. Contrary to the nose, there are slight hints of spices such as black pepper and nutmeg. Here, too, the peat note is bursting through.
The finish is very long, marine and mineral with a peppery tail.

In conclusion, this Voodoo series whisky, like The Iron Collar, is a direct trip to the island of Islay. Truly great to pair with fish dinners.
