Here is the first Michter’s bourbon to arrive on these pages, and before tasting the ten year old, I pour into the glass the small batch version, for which no more than twenty barrels are chosen.
Working initially with whiskey supplied externally but from a single source (first Willett distillery, then Brown Forman), Michter’s began bottling its own whiskey in early 2019, using a blend of 79% corn, 11% rye and 10% wheat for the bourbon.
Tasting notes
Amber in the glass.
The nose is spicy and mellifluous, with nutmeg, cinnamon, honey, ripe banana, sultanas, marzipan and brown sugar. The tones are not particularly bright, with a light shade of toasted caramel in the background.
The body is quite light and opens up on the palate with a slight peppery note of baked apple, ripe banana, cinnamon, honey, vanilla and popcorn. As on the nose, it’s quite calm in its scents, sweet but not too much, with a bitter and dry vein of dried fruit background.
The finish is not very long and dry, with a hint of pepper, honey, baked apple, cinnamon.
Not very incisive, perhaps too young to be so, it comes across as a light, disengaged, almost summery dram.
