And after the Bourbon one, here’s the single cask ex-Sherry of The Balvenie, part of the annual series divided between the two types of casks, always bottled at the same strength, as a variant of the distillery’s standard versions.
Again the 2020 edition, from barrel 11272, always all natural, unlike the basic versions.
Garnet in the glass.
Intensely sherried nose, with dried figs and dates, sour cherries, sultanas, nutmeg, pecans, blood orange. Very light note of acetone in the background. Simple and direct.
It’s decidedly more varied on the palate, announcing itself with a gentle peppering of creamy cooked fruit (apples, pears), sultanas in spirit, berries, candied orange, dark chocolate, leather. Spices growing over time, with nutmeg and cloves in the background over a patina of smoked wood and bitter bits. Dry in length.
Long, dry finish of pepper, dried fruit, pecans, chocolate, tobacco, leather.
An ambivalent whisky, sweet and rough at the same time, an interplay of contrasts that grows over time and makes for a more interesting drink than the nose would suggest.
