How long has the only Jura distillery been missing from these pages!
Admittedly, it’s not the most popular label among whisky drinkers, and its reputation is not exactly flattering, but it has a respectable production that deserves attention.
Bottled in 2018 from a mix of peated and unpeated malts (to the benefit of the latter), initially matured in ex-bourbon casks and finished in ex-sherry PX with twenty-year-old casks, all without any indication of overall age and made for the travel-retail market, though readily available everywhere.
The name refers to the only road across the island, the wilderness of which is well worth a visit.
Tasting Notes
The nose is very lactic, between yoghurt and Alpine cheese, with a distinct impression of yeast and mould. Beneath this rather intense layer, very ripe fruit (peach, apple, apricot, plum), almonds, spices (nutmeg, cinnamon), sugar paste and a faint note of smoke, which becomes more pronounced after a while, earthy and mineral.
In the mouth, the smoke increases in volume, even if only initially, a bonfire of earthiness that brings to mind various toasts, including malt, nuts (almonds, hazelnuts) and coffee, leaving the fruit in the background and with a lighter body than expected. With time, a menthol vein with thyme and a light spiciness emerges.
The aftertaste is quite short, with toasted wood, vegetal notes and nuts.
If it has a certain personality on the nose, it is lost in the drink, rather anonymous and fleeting, leaving no trace in the memory.
