Again the Nouvelle Vague series created by the whim of David Bennett, returning to Tobermory’s peated whisky after the 10 year old we tried in 2020.
Single cask hogshead refill in May 2009 which produced 311 bottles in September 2021, as always cask strength and all natural.

Tasting notes

Ledaig’s profile is clearly evident on the nose, wading through ash and dull embers with maritime and earthy intrusions, where the fruit appears as sharp as a dagger made of apple, pineapple and pear, which may not cut anything but make a nice stain on the opponent’s shirt. Wet coins and iodine in the rear, as impressions of anti-vegan grilling and dried orange with a touch of yoghurt sauce rise. Not to be missed but appetising.
Gradation fully integrated on the palate, which pours drips of peat on the tongue, almost an equally mellow ash toothpaste, pushing on burnt tones that leave little room for subtlety. Impressions of orange and tamarind, catalan cream (a lot of crust and little cream), liquorice and a vegetal, vaguely balsamic vein that lingers among the charcoal.
The finish is quite long and burnt but not too much, with saline and citrus touches and the vegetal notes that attempt revenge in vain.

Lots, lots of peat, which eats up (almost) all the distillate especially on the palate, preventing its personality from fully emerging and ending up (not surprisingly) tarring the flavours without much depth or fun. More in the neighbourhood of Islay than Mull, but with less character.
