It’s not often you have the privilege of trying what is literally a piece of history.
It’s well known that Teeling is too young a distillery to be producing such great ageing whiskies, but thanks to the founder’s long association with the Cooley distillery they have an untold number of casks of different ages at their disposal.
And with the Vintage Reserve Collection series we have the chance to get to know this style from a long time ago.
A 1988 distillate matured in ex-Rum casks (a real record for this kind of ageing), released in the summer of 2021 in just 750 bottles at a very challenging price, it is not, however, the oldest of the series, surpassed by a 37-year-old in ex-Bourbon, and was joined in February 2022 by another 32-year-old with mixed maturation in ex-Rum and ex-Sherry, which you will soon see on these pages.
The nose is greeted by a pronounced hint of coffee powder that opens the way to rum influences with cooked fruit, iced sugar, cocoa and macadamia nut. Creamy and smooth, it is reminiscent of a coffee liqueur, with light spicy touches and reminiscences of leather. Over time, a fresher, floral side emerges along with orange jelly. Rich.
In the mouth it is oily, almost chewy, with the floral side more pronounced from which appears a hint of violet, on red fruits (blueberries and raspberries), pear compote, coffee chocolate, hint of liquorice. Very compact and solid, almost monolithic, with a sprinkling of spices and old wood.
The finish is long and dry, with nutmeg, coffee, dried fruit, ripe blueberries, cucumber, liquorice root and leather.
An old-fashioned gentleman, compassionate and mature, who doesn’t offer strong emotions but quiet certainties, without smears or imbalances. A wealth of aromas and sensations with a long persistence, which conquers without clamour by working with finesse. Excellent.
