Spring 2015 saw the debut of the cask strength version of the rye produced by Michter’s, and it was an immediate success, so much so that it was quickly released outside the US borders.
Annual bottlings from a single cask, with an alcohol content that varies between 107 and 114 proof, depending on the cask used, which is an exception in the American panorama, unlike in Scotland where similar products are much more common.

Tasting notes

Dark amber in the glass,
An initial whiff of acetone soon gives way to strong but non-invasive spices on the nose with nutmeg, cinnamon and a pinch of cloves, combined with hints of freshly cut wood, pine needles, toasted cane sugar, dried dates and acacia honey. It becomes softer and more molasses-like over time, veering towards caramel.
Drier but still full-bodied on the palate, with a hint of chilli on a less sweet profile where the woody component becomes more present together with a strong coffee aftertaste. Vanilla, caramel and toasted sugar are accompanied by mentholated tones with cinnamon and a very slight hint of bitterness along the length.
The finish is long and dry with balsamic brushstrokes on dried fruit, caramel, toasted wood and coffee.

The management of the alcohol content is excellent, well balanced to push and amalgamate the flavours of the whiskey, which proves to be richer and more appealing to the palate than it promises in the glass.
