While sifting through both old and new samples, I realized I had three very specific ones that relate to some proposals from a few years ago by the Dutch IB Hogshead Imports: all blended of different ages. I believe it’s time to taste them, and I start by pouring this first blended into the glass, consisting of 45% Macallan and 55% North British.

The sherry refill cask was filled in 2005 and emptied in 2023, yielding a total of 614 bottles, all at 45.5%abv. Currently, its availability is virtually non-existent, which is reflected in the indicative price.

Tasting Notes

The color closely resembles that of honey.

I bring my nose closer… and here is the characteristic note of the grain, half between solvent and polished light wood: not exactly the height of pleasure, as far as I’m concerned. Then fortunately the barrel arrives to straighten the picture, with nuts (walnuts and almonds), raisins, plum cake, milk chocolate, and ripe apricot. Quite surprising is the presence of vanilla which here pairs with the candy.

In mouth, the lethal mix of solvent/polished wood takes up too much space, unfortunately. You can notice, in any case, the white-fleshed fruit (apple and pear), the unripe fig, and the confectionery, with a sprinkle of pepper, to which are added, on the second palate, apricot and milk chocolate. To be fair, the gradation is perfect. Excuse me, but where is Macallan?

The finale is brief, the grain note lingers to coat the mouth just long enough not to become unpleasant, like an unwanted guest who luckily doesn’t stay long, and the candy returns to close the circle and the drink.

Review: Given the limited familiarity with the genre, I didn’t have high expectations. The initial impact, both on the nose and palate, is a bit discouraging, but fortunately, the situation improves. However, the presence of Macallan remains, in my opinion, intangible. More or less like my enthusiasm.
