Diageo Announces Johnnie Walker Blue Label Ultra in World’s Lightest Glass Bottle

In its constant search for new ways to reduce the environmental impact of its products, Diageo has announced a special edition of the Johnnie Walker Blue Label (called Ultra) in the world’s lightest glass bottle.

180 grams against the 850 grams of the traditional squared bottle, in a teardrop format that doesn’t allow the product to stand on its own, thus requiring a bamboo stand, which is currently to be released in 888 pieces at a price of around €1,130.00.

Five years of research in collaboration with Şişecam to find this solution that would reduce Co2 emissions both during production and transport, in the order of half a gram for every gram of glass produced in this format, which is in addition to another weight reduction already applied to the 18 year old (-35%) and that (for now only hoped for) of 25% for the standard Blue Label.

If the reduction in glass certainly has a positive impact on the supply chain, it’s not known what the impact of the additional bamboo support will be, which due to its shape certainly requires special packaging that could nullify, at least in part, any advantage gained with the new bottle.
