Edition number two of this Vintage Series for Morrison’s blended label, with distillates from 1994 bottled in August 2022, so we’re looking at twenty-eight years of ageing, not exactly chump change.
Whisky as always from Speyside, specifically from the Glenlivet region, which produced 796 cask strength bottles, this is not the first bottling of this vintage released by Old Perth, but so far the most mature.
The first release, from 2021, was a 1996 vintage, while the third, released just this month, is from 2007 whiskies.
Tasting notes
The nose shows a rough decadence of black cherries, dried figs and dates, candied fruit (orange, coconut, pineapple), toasted nuts and leather. A dense, spicy nose, where cinnamon and nutmeg punctuate pastry, milk chocolate, honey and a drop of Turkish coffee, taking a back seat to the intense sherried rivers that do not give way as time passes in the glass. Imposing.
In the mouth it is mellow, creating an oily patina over the entire palate in which the dark impressions of the nose can be found, where the sherry reigns in its rough sweetness, accentuating the coffee and chocolate notes with sour cherries and dried fruit leading the line. Less decisive but well-integrated spices lend liveliness to an otherwise composed and severe elegance.
Quite long finish of sherry, nuts, light spicy touches, coffee, chocolate and a slight balsamic note.
A sherry bomb of which age has smoothed out the excesses and roughness, thanks also to the skilful blending of the casks that manages to create a balanced and composed whole of great class that perhaps lacks a little emotion.
