We return after some time to Morrison Distillers’ blended, which draws from distilleries in the Glenlivet area to create a blend that, in its basic edition, had proved very solid.
Here we find the cask strength version, but not the one of the basic portfolio (at 58.6%ABV) but the second of (so far) three limited, variable-gradation versions, of which we try this 2020 release.
An unspecified number of bottles for an all-sherry blended, like the basic bottlings, from three different casks (puncheon, hogshead and butt) and not easily available.
Tasting notes
On the nose, the sherry expresses its slightly sour influence with almost lactic traits, like strawberry Galatines, with a rather fresh and crisp soul where the alcohol content is completely absent. Alongside trifle, raspberries and blood orange, a darker side emerges, with black cherries, dried figs and leather in the background, creating a balanced, full-bodied whole.
On the palate, a whiff of white pepper reminds you of the not inconsiderable alcoholic strength, which together with a certain astringency pushes the pedal of red fruits into a marmellous consistency in which the olfactory evocations return, where the darker side always remains in the background but far from invisible. Mystical appearance of vegetal notes along the length.
Quite long and astringent finish of red fruits, brushstrokes of spices, vegetable touches and splashes of citrus.
Not very rich and with a palate less incisive than the aromas would suggest, it perhaps pays for some sins of youth, but it’s easy to drink, succeeding in the not easy task of containing the Sherried influences without being devoured by them.
