First limited edition of 2022, launched in early March, resuming a highly successful maturation released first and only time in 2015.
Aged for just over five years in 46 French oak hogshead casks that had contained the fortified wine from Portugal, the vatting of which took place in October 2021, but the lack of glass for the bottles (a problem that affected many distilleries) meant that the 17,000-piece bottling was postponed until February the following year.
The nose is sweet and pungent at the same time, the citrus signature of Kilchoman is joined by notes of toffee, caramel, incense and almonds, with a smoky, vegetal peat that permeates the aromas without overpowering them. Very elegant, over time impressions of tobacco and tropical fruit grow, with a slight acidic component that titillates the nostrils.
Pepper and paprika emerge overbearingly on the palate, with a sparkling vivacity that lights up the salty and smoky tones, mixed in a cream of candied orange, chocolate, caramel, leather and incense. Very dense despite its young age, the length expresses light balsamic tones, with tannins that give a pleasant astringency.
The finish is long and dry, savoury, embers off caramelised fruit, citrus, tobacco and malt notes.
Damn drinkable and with a commendable balance of peat and fortified wine, creamy and intense with flawless elegance. It’s sure to blow the minds of many a Kilchoman fan and more.
