After making their debut at the recent Roma Whisky Festival, the two new bottlings from the Maltagliati & Mazzieri duo, who returned to the American Oak line in collaboration with Jerry Thomas Project, with two American whiskies from the defunct Death’s Door distillery in Wisconsin, are now also available online.
Let’s start with the single malt, which is certainly not a common type across the Atlantic. It’s the result of pot still distillation of a mix of malted barley and rye (70/30) with six years’ refinement in a single cask, formerly Foursquare Barbados rum: Dream Whisky confirms its attention to the choice of casks and to treading new paths, not for the sake of being different but for a constant search for sensations and evocations that shake the soul.
The nose is as warm and enveloping as the colour in the glass suggests, like opening a cedar humidor where the cigars have given way to a spicy pot pourri of cinnamon, nutmeg and turmeric. Perhaps it’s also a Quality Street box, with toffee, caramel, milk chocolate and sweet liquorice dipping into the spices in a sinuous and seductive amalgam. Very persistent and intense, the interplay between rough and soft tones is tireless.
Decisive and lively at the start, on the palate ginger and white pepper pave the way for a thick, almost chewy body of praline and blood orange, with a savoury component that insinuates itself among tones of liquorice, coffee, honey and, along the length, curious vegetal notes of celery and fennel.
The finish is quite long with saline tips on cedar wood, spices, honey, chinotto and vegetal notes.
A young but full-bodied and structured whiskey with strong evocative abilities and a distinct personality that engages and pampers without easy shortcuts.
If you have preconceptions about American whiskeys, this single cask will make you forget them.
