The “beast of Dufftown” comes out on the label of this Special Release, and this time Ken Taylor, the illustrator for this series under the motto “Legends Untold”, has chosen a wolf to embody the Mortlach distillery, the “moonlit beast”.
Cask strength, a 2007 distillate that spent its thirteen years in a mixture of virgin casks and second-fill Bourbon, abandoning the former Sherry casks that are part of Mortlach’s tradition.
The opening nose is soft but scratched by spicy touches of wood, nutmeg and cinnamon over fruity tones (apple, apricot, unripe banana), vanilla, honey, malt, hazelnuts and a lingering mineral and herbaceous note in the background, especially on the length. Classic, though not for Mortlach.
In the mouth it picks up the herbaceous tenors with a clear woody liveliness, well integrated with a pronounced mineral savouriness and sprinkle of black pepper on a full and mellow body, with the sweet notes muted compared to the prevalence of spices and tobacco, wood polish, hint of liquorice root. On the length, a Cuban cigar humidor opens up in which bits of dehydrated apple and cinnamon have been scattered. Walnuts.
Medium-long finish of nuts, tobacco, savoury and herbaceous touches.
A curious variation on the theme of the distillery, which deviates (but not too much) from the score to which we are accustomed with a few interesting digressions, enough to arouse interest but not to trigger open applause.
