Like many distilleries, Teeling offers a bottling that can only be purchased on site (or in their online shop), now in its fourth year.
These are bottlings with increasing but undeclared ageing, characterised by particular finishings: previously, chestnut casks, Hungarian wood, chinquapin (a subspecies of American oak) have been used, while for this 2021 they went for virgin Irish oak.
It’s a 75/25 blend of corn and malt, a version originally created to raise funds for frontline workers against Covid (300-bottle edition at 48.5%ABV), while the current one is a larger run and in the classic 46%ABV.
At least six years spent in ex-Bourbon casks with a finishing for nine to fifteen months in Irish wood casks.
Like all Distillery Exclusives, the label can be personalised with your name or any other inscription for an additional 5 euros.
A warm wood spice is the greeting of this whiskey on the nose, with nutmeg and cinnamon accompanying a gentle profile of vanilla, caramel, ripe banana, peach, lemon peel, pecans. Leather and chocolate undertones with a slight herbaceous vein. Not very intense, almost on tiptoe.
On the palate, milk chocolate, vanilla, salted caramel, coffee, ripe pear, spicy touches. Leather and tobacco leaves. On the length, the hints of wood and spices are more evident.
Quite long and spicy finish, with vanilla, dried fruit, wood, savoury tip.
A very drinkable whiskey, not particularly incisive but very pleasant, smooth and with the woods well pronounced without being invasive. Excellent for those approaching Irish whiskey for the first time.
