Latest in the Hyde number series produced by Irish bottler Hibernia, a series that runs from number 1 to number 9 with each bottle commemorating an important year in Irish history and, in particular, in the life of Douglas Hyde, the first president of the Irish Republic. In particular, here we are in 1906, the year when President Hyde made his first tour of the United States, reinforcing what is a historic bond between the two countries.
As for the whiskey, it ‘s a single malt made from malted Irish barley in an undisclosed distillery, which spent at least eight years in ex-Bourbon casks from Kentucky and then spent nine months in ex-Tawny Port casks from the village of Pinhão in the Douro Valley, Portugal.
Triple distillation and a limited run of 5,000 bottles: the one in my hands is bottle no. 3841, courtesy of Conor Hyde.

Tasting notes

The Port has done its work on the malt, creating an intense nose of berries (wild strawberry and blueberry), gooseberries, vanilla, malt, lemon juice, wrapped in a warm spicy blanket of cinnamon and nutmeg. Ginger biscuits and pine nuts. Rich and dark.
The palate reinforces the vinous and sour profile, enhanced by tones of plums, crisp apple, berries, orange peel, vanilla and petit biscuits. Spices (cinnamon, nutmeg, black pepper and a touch of ginger) are the leitmotif of the dram, punctuated by flashes of lemon and propolis.
Quite long and spicy finish of dried fruits, plums, malt biscuits, sultanas.

A curious Irish whiskey, the maturation in Port has given it an unusual personality, with a stimulating alternation of vinous and warming scents, with a drinkability that is perhaps not easy but enjoyable just like that.
