Another bottle from Cadenhead’s (endless) Authentic Collection, this time in the Highlands with a thirteen-year-old from the distillery of Macduff, which in independent bottlers finds new life.
Distilled in 2006 and poured at cask strength (albeit rather low) in 222 bottles in February 2020, it’s not to be confused with another Macduff of the same vintage but bottled the previous year and at a higher strength.
Tasting notes
Light gold in the glass.
The nose is beautifully fresh and youthful, with herbaceous and spicy wood notes that pamper the nostrils. Lots of vanilla and yellow fruit (peach, apple, pineapple), kiwi, honey, a touch of nutmeg and lemon, nut bread. A classic.
The sparkling youth is confirmed on the palate, with a good sprinkling of pepper and ginger on a soft, sugary body of fruit and meringue, lemon cream and touches of almonds and walnuts.
Medium-long, dry finish of anise, almond and lemon.
A simple, straightforward, almost textbook, well-balanced whisky that may not shine with great personality but certainly doesn’t disappoint, offering a pleasant, relaxing dram, which is sometimes just what you need.
