The first Bourbon by Balcones on these pages, and as always when it comes to this Texan distillery, the result of non-trivial research into raw materials and processing.
A blend of the beloved blue corn, rye, wheat and malted barley, then distilled in pot stills as the name suggests, this edition is part of their core portfolio and is therefore repeated year after year.
The bottle in my hands it’s from the 2020 edition.
Mahogany in the glass.
The nose immediately reveals the toastiness of the wood, a roughness that accompanies sweeter and more mellow tones of apple pie, cereals, honey, caramel, brown sugar. All spiced up with nutmeg and cinnamon, in a caressing and all in all calm combination for a Bourbon. Over time, it becomes warmer and more decisive and an impression of sacher torte emerges.
It remains rough on the palate, with a clear presence of leather on which rest wood spices and fruit (apples, sultanas, blood orange), honey, crème brûlée, cocoa and maple juice. The alcohol content is warmer than you would expect, harmonious with the flavours.
Not particularly long finish, of spices, orange, honey, leather, pecans.
A solid, compact Bourbon that, in the spirit of Balcones, follows different paths from the usual, not suited to a distracted drinking, requiring time to appreciate all the nuances that are expressed especially on the length. Perhaps not the most interesting of their expressions, but with a unique and recognisable signature and at a price, as always, unbeatable for this quality.
