Like many Japanese distilleries, White Oak has only been producing whisky for a relatively short time, having only received a licence to produce the spirit in 1919, and was the first to have this privilege even though it was founded in 1679.
Known above all for its Akashi label, which is also flanked by Shin, it mainly produces sake, so much so that in the beginning whisky distillation was not the company’s core business, and it only began to produce it seriously in the 1960s with the installation of new Scottish-style stills, until production increased dramatically with the exponential growth in domestic and international demand for Japanese whisky in the following years.

Here I am with a blended Akashi whisky, in the usual 50cl bottle.
I must warn you, this is the first Japanese whisky I’ve approached, so it seemed sensible to start with something (on paper) as simple as a ‘basic’ blended: therefore, I won’t answer for the rubbish I might write…
I apologise instead for the scarcity of production details, but it’s not easy to find them.

Tasting notes

Dark amber in the glass.
Delicate and floral nose, very light, almost ethereal, with almond blossom, dog rose, pecans, pears. Over time the aromas open up and intensify, with the addition of vanilla berries, hints of aniseed, worked wood. Rather simple, thanks also to the basic alcohol content.
More herbaceous on the palate, always in the sign of sweetness, with sweet tones of caramel, nuts, unripe plums, pear. More wood in the background, with some light spicy touches of nutmeg.
The finish is quite brief and fleeting, of hazelnuts, vanilla and wood.

A simple, easy-going dram that delivers what it promises without fudging, the classic whisky “suitable for everyone” that may turn the nose up at the seasoned drinker, but is excellent for introducing those who do not yet know or even fear this distillate!
