Back to Cadenhead’s Authentic Collection, still on Islay, with the innovative Bruichladdich in an old-fashioned version.

Distilled in 1993 and bottled in February 2016, from the hogshead ex-Bourbon cask that contained it, this Bruichladdich produced 228 cask strength bottles, still easy to find.

Tasting notes

Straw yellow in colour with some amber reflections.
The nose is reached by a clear scent of pistachios, from which vanilla, caramel and yellow peach emerge, with a bitter and spicy undertone. Beeswax on wood. The nose is delicate and elegant, yet rigid like an old governess.
On the palate, the sea salt softens the sweeter aromas, which nevertheless remain pre-eminent, with almonds, more yellow fruit and vanilla, and a touch of spice. The alcoholic bite is a bit intrusive and tends to flatten the aromas, leaving little evolution. Slight background of wet peat.
The finish is not very long, saline and herbaceous, vaguely ashy.

Not a very well-balanced whisky, far from the distillery’s strong modern personalities, with a few alcoholic mismatches.
