Founded in 1971 by John Haig & Co. to produce whisky for inclusion in their blends, it closed its doors in 1985 due to the recession, remaining silent for a few years.
It reopened in 1989 and (with a few more brief periods of closure) came under the control of the giant Diageo, sharing its workforce for a while with neighbouring Glenlossie, becoming operational only for a few months a year, while since 2008 it has been back at full capacity.
The distillate produced is still used for blends, with rare bottlings of its own, including the infamous Loch Dhu, which, due to the massive use of caramel additives, acquired a very dark colour, gaining a very bad reputation (and, for this, a certain cult) in the short period of production, between 1997 and 1999.
Flora & Fauna is in fact the distillery’s only original bottling, which is not surprising given that its huge warehouses are also used as storage for ageing whiskies from other Diageo labels.
The nose is fresh and floral with notes of almond, apples, pears, pineapple, sugar paste, honey, lemon drop. In the background, hints of yeast and bread with a slight hint of acidity.
Creamy on the palate with a pleasant texture, it is less assertive in its flavours with traits that alternate sweetness and acidity with pears, lemon tart, almonds, cereals, honey. A hint of pepper and a bitter touch of rhubarb punctuate the drink. Peculiar.
Medium-long, saline finish, with a hint of smoke, dried fruit, vanilla, lemon peel.
A rather simple whisky but not without a few surprises, although not enough to make it stand out, it hints at the possibility of offering something more but passing the buck to those willing to make the effort.
