One of the most obvious consequences of the whisky boom in recent years is the exponential increase in NAS (whiskies without an official ageing declaration) on the market. Distilleries all over the world are responding to the growing demand by expanding their offer with very young single malts. The obvious risk is to sacrifice the quality of the product to the satisfaction of demand.
Apart from general considerations, however, each whisky has its own history: there are some excellent ones with just a few years on their shoulders and some less successful ones even though they are very old. All that is needed is to be able to taste them without too many preconceptions.
Bowmore N°1 is just such a NAS, and replaces in the distillery’s core range the Small Batch, discontinued in 2017.
Aged in first-fill ex-Bourbon casks, it is offered at the standard strength of 40% ABV. The appellation N°1 is obviously reminiscent of the N°1 Vault, Scotland’s oldest barrel storage facility, located below sea level, for which Bowmore is famous. It’s widely available (even in supermarkets) and very well priced.
The colour is gold.
On the nose, enveloped in an almost caressing peat smoke, rest quiet hints of citrus custard (orange and grapefruit), vanilla (less than expected) and wood, with a sprinkling of white pepper. The nose isn’t aggressive, pleasant but static.
On the palate, the softness of the body is underpinned by notes of aromatic peat, custard, lemon and wood. The latter, in particular, removes any doubt about the youth of the single malt.
The finish is short, with little peat, little cream and an overall sense of vagueness.
A pleasant but rather basic daily dram, which does not develop over time. In short, an easy whisky for inattentive drinkers or occasional consumers.
Even as an introduction to the distillery, we definitely prefer the 12yo.
