Every now and then we get a little fortune, like finding a sample of a vintage bottle that isn’t on the market.
The idea behind this blog is (and remains) that of offering whiskies within everyone’s reach, so you won’t find a string of unobtainable or very expensive bottles, rest assured!
Also because in this case it’s really an exception, a curiosity that I think it’s still a pleasure to read about.
So we are talking about a bottle from the basic Glenfarclas ageing process that is almost 50 years old (more or less as old as I am), the exact year isn’t known to me, nor can I guarantee that it looks exactly as shown here.
But then… it’s the idea that counts, isn’t it?
Tasting notes
The aroma in the glass is a bit off, age doesn’t seem to have done this bottle much good, it takes time and patience for it to open. Sour cherries, cinnamon, Williams pears, wood wax. Not very complex and all in all opaque.
In the mouth it livens up, albeit a little, with the Sherried personality more pronounced along with hints of candied citrus and a delicate spiciness. In the background, there is a slight bitter and metallic note, which at times disrupts the aromas.
And it prevails in the finish, of medium length, with metal smeared with sour cherries and almonds.
To be honest, I wasn’t sure whether to publish this tasting: the bottle looks badly aged, and being a freebie I have no guarantee as to how it was stored.
My assessment should therefore be taken with a grain of salt, as it may not reflect the actual aromas and sensations of this bottling.
